Discussion about Billy Stewart - Summertime / To Love To Love

It's really hard to do a bad version of this Gershwin classic. It's one of those perfect songs, like Cole Porter's "Night and Day". This standard has been done by just about everybody. The weakest version I can remember hearing is the Zombies, from their first lp.I remember seeing Billy Stewart miming this song on Robin Seymour's "Swingin' Time" on Canada's Channel 9 from Windsor. Billy Stewart was a big, big man. I believe he died a few years after this release. Stewart's version is big band, jazzy and Billy is scatting his heart out. His rendition is riveting; it's like a prolonged two and a half minute orgasm.Which attests to what a great song "Summertime" is. Slow and bluesy a la Janis Joplin or Vegas show biz big band a la Billy Stewart and they both work just fine.I like this Billy Stewart version best.
